Types Of Monitor Technology
Different monitor technologies evolved over time. There are basically three types of monitor technology,namely Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) technology, Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)Technology and Organic Light Emitting Diode Technology. Till the end of last century, CRT technology was the most widely used. But with advent of LCD technology, the CRT monitors are being phased out. OLED is the monitor technology of future. Cathode Ray Tube(CRT) Technology
Cathode Ray Tube monitors belong to the the first generation monitor technology. A Cathode Ray Tube consists of one or more electron guns, which discharge electrons into phosphorus pixels through a magnetic field. Three pixels colors, Red,Green and Blue are illuminated when hit by the ray of electrons. The degree of illumination depends upon the deflection of electron stream by the magnetic field. In the 1970s, CRT monitors were monochrome and fixed to the computer and keyboard physically. The image quality was substandard. In early 1980s, Color Graphics Adapter, which could display four colors with a resolution of 320×200 pixels, was invented by IBM. Later in 1984, Enhanced Graphics Adapter was introduced which could display 16 colors with a resolution of 640×350 pixels. The advantages of CRT monitor is that it is cheaper and the viewing angle is close to 180 degree. Network support for CRT monitors is still widely available, though LCD type of monitors are gradually replacing it.

Liquid Crystal Display(LCD) Technology
Liquid Crystal Display monitors are the most widely used monitors today. Not only computers, but the entire range of electronic products like televisions, digital cameras, mobile phone and MP3 players feature LCD displays. LCD monitors consist of liquid crystal filled pixels inserted between two polarizing filters. A back-light source generates light which passes through the filters. The electrodes controls the flow of current which passes through the liquid crystals and aligns them in a particular direction. The alignment of the crystals, controlled by the electrodes, sets the intensity and color for the light which will pass through the second filter and will hit the screen. The liquid crystal filled pixels create the image on the computer monitor. Thin Film Transistor technology is the most widely used LCD type of monitors. The plus points of LCD technology are that compared to CRT, it consumes less power, weighs less and occupies less space. Since LCD type of monitors are becoming more popular, PC support for these monitors are rendered by many network support providers.

Organic Light Emitting Diode(OLED) Technology
Organic Light Emitting Technology is the latest screen technology, which uses the principle of electroluminescence. Instead of using the back-light,as it is used in LCD technology, this technology uses materials which glow when a electric potential is applied. This make the monitors much lighter and slimmer and improves the contrast ratio, color reproduction,response time and flexibility. Because of the cost factors, this technology is not used in PCs, but devices with smaller screens, like digital camera and smart phones feature it. Since this technology is still in development stage, PC support for these monitors is scarce.

The Other Power Tool: A Rugged Embedded Computer

A rugged embedded computer is generally a tablet or small form factor device that is built to withstand exposure to extreme environmental conditions. It is not designed to be a full replacement for a standard PC, but to allow the user to conduct activities where access to a particular program is required despite the harsh environment. The end user may be a field engineer, delivery person, warehouse employee, military, or first responder, such as police or emergency medical worker.

Ruggedized computers conform to any number of specifications based on their intended use. As an example, there are different standards for military applications as well as industrial ones. Despite this fact, these computers are generally water-resistant or completely waterproof and are readable in bright light or low light conditions. Some are equipped with a keyboard while others have dedicated function buttons and use the screen for input. They can also be used by the average consumer who is tough on equipment or works in outdoor weather of all types.

Since they were designed to work under harsh conditions, these computers can be tailored to be kid-friendly. Small children can be especially rough on electronic devices, but a shockproof computer is more than adequate to withstand the abuse. Their ability to resist water can also be an advantage in the event of accidental beverage spills.

For the home handyman, these embedded devices can be valuable. When the device has wireless capabilities, it is possible for someone to use the Internet as a reference while working on the task at the same time. For example, installation instructions for a project may be needed to do the job correctly without having to call a local contractor. Video playback might be limited, but most embedded devices are capable of displaying static images found in do-it-yourself websites.

Professionals would also be able to use them in their line of work. Carpenters would not have any need to worry about sawdust destroying their computer as they built custom projects. Mechanics would not have to worry about grease smudges on the screen or keyboard. It would allow them to conduct administrative functions done on a standard computer, such as bookkeeping, in the same environment as their work. There would not be many standard PC’s that would up to the task or be as portable.

Embedded rugged computers are small, lightweight devices that are capable of handling adverse working conditions. Originally built for military or industrial tasks, units that are available to the public can be put to everyday use and prove an invaluable tool. These devices can find a practical place in the home or toolbox.
